Nkosinathi Sithole’s Hunger Eats a Man Wins the 2016 Sunday Times Literary Fiction Award

Debut novelist and Penguin Random House SA author, Nkosinathi Sithole, was announced as a winner at this year’s Sunday Times Literary Awards, recently held at a black tie event in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Sithole was awarded the Barry Ronge Fiction Prize for his bookHunger Eats a Man, a beautifully poetic, funny and highly relevant novel that highlights the ongoing plight of many rural South Africans and the power of a community working together to bring about change.

The Barry Ronge Fiction Prize was judged this year by Rustum Kozain (chair), Angela Makholwa-Moabelo and Stephen Johnson. Advocate Thuli Madonsela was the guest speaker at the event.

Of Hunger Eats a Man, Kozain says, “This is something entirely new in South African literature, in terms of its language and style. The writing is exceptional in the way it bends English to its own purpose. It’s a beautiful, disturbing, highly original novel with touches of unexpected humour.

Nkosinathi Sithole has a PhD in English Studies and teaches at the University of Zululand.
