Heart-warming, funny and proudly South African chick-lit

What do you get when a naïve, heartbroken young lady moves to New York to start a new life? A brilliant novel about the misadventures of Rachel Marcus who finds herself in cringe-worthy situations and goes on countless bad dates.

After her whole world splits apart at the seams, Rachel decides a fresh start is in order and moves to New York, where she will hopefully find a fabulous job and a hunky man. Unfortunately, once again life throws another hurdle her way and forces her to change her path. Instead of a mansion, she finds herself in a cockroach infested apartment. After struggling to find her dream job she is forced to take a job at a below average advertising agency and work with hippies and alcoholics. Her dating life is just as unsuccessful as she finds herself in all sorts of situations with the men she keeps company with. The only thing that keeps her sane is her new best friend and neighbour, Sue and the fact that she has to prove herself to everyone back home. Rachel is somewhat clumsy and maybe a little too trusting, but you fall in love with the character and enjoy her misguided journey.

The characters come to life between the pages of this book filled with wit, humour and unfortunate events that will have you giggling. The plot will capture and intrigue you.

With believable characters and a relatively unexpected ending, this book will keep you turning pages as it reveals reveal new dramas and countless laughs.

Nothing about A Million Miles from Normal is far fetched and normal people can relate to the characters, their personalities and the story line. A heart-warming, funny and proudly South African chick lit story.

Rachel’s life changes forever and so will yours after a good read.

(Paige Nick's latest book is called This Way Up, another down-to-earth hilarious read about sex columnist and agony aunt Stella de Villiers.)
