Chinua Achebe was a prominent and prolific writer, poet, professor and literary critic, renowned for novels that described the effects of Western customs and values on traditional African society. He is best known for Things Fall Apart (1958), a novel that has sold more than ten million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than fifty languages. Achebe is the winner of numerous honours and awards, including the Commonwealth Poetry Prize, the Man Booker International Prize for Fiction, honorary doctorates from more than thirty colleges and universities, and Nigeria’s highest award for intellectual achievement, the Nigerian National Merit Award.
