Local Imprints

In July 1935, Allen Lane revolutionized publishing with the introduction of the first ten Penguin paperbacks. Within a year, more than one hundred titles were in print and one million Penguin books had been sold. Little did Lane realize the impact his “paperback revolution” had on reading—today, almost 80 years later, more than 600 million paperbacks are sold annually worldwide. Now Penguin and Penguin Classics trade paperbacks and eBooks carry the most recognized logo of any book publisher in the world, with a list as stimulating and diverse as readers themselves.

Portfolio was founded in 2001 as the first dedicated business imprint within Penguin Group. It publishes distinctive hardcovers and trade paperbacks in the fields of management, leadership, marketing, business narrative, investing, personal finance, economics, technology, sales, entrepreneurship, and career advice. 

Umuzi, the name chosen for the imprint, combines powerful connotations of ‘home' and ‘hearth', while it happily resonates too with ‘muse', ‘music' and with the ‘house' element of Random House. It thus perfectly expresses the scope and ambitions of the list, which in a short time has made remarkable progress in establishing itself as the home of choice for both new and established literary voices from South Africa, in fiction and non-fiction.

Zebra Press is one of South Africa's leading publishing imprints, specialising in politics, current affairs and history, biography and memoir, sport, business and personal finance. Originally launched in the mid-1990s as the black and white imprint of Struik Publishers, Zebra Press has produced an impressive list of award-winning titles.

At the core of the Struik Travel & Heritage imprint is a small team that is fiercely dedicated to showcasing our beautiful country's scenic splendour and diverse cultural heritage. We publish a range of travel narratives, informative guides and attractive coffee-table books on a variety of topics - encompassing everything from hiking, exploration and other outdoor activities to pictorial souvenirs, photographic essays and large, vibrantly illustrated tomes.

Struik Nature is the leading specialist Natural History publisher in southern Africa, associated with the best-selling and most highly regarded field guides in the region.  We publish full-colour illustrated books across a variety of subject areas, including birds, mammals, reptiles, trees and flowers, the marine environment, geology, astronomy,  general wildlife, and children's nature. 

Struik Lifestyle publishes a diverse range of books on family, home and daily living. In recent years, Struik has become South Africa's leading cookery publisher, producing books suitable for everyday home cooking to those that would appeal to more serious foodies. Our cookery books celebrate our local authors and the exciting diversity of culture and tastes across South Africa.


Struik Children originated in 2014 following the great demand for Afrikaans children's and youth books. Struik wants to create greater diversity in the market by discovering and developing new writers and creating an alternative publication channel for experienced writers.


In May 2010 Random House Struik acquired the Fernwood Press list, a specialist imprint featuring a splendid range of illustrated non-fiction works on southern Africa's cultural and natural history for the discerning buyer and collector. 


Penguin Random House acquired the LAPA list in early 2020. LAPA is an acronym for “Lees Afrikaans, Praat Afrikaans”. LAPA mainly publishes Afrikaans books, but also publish some titles in English. Affordable books for every age group and taste is LAPA's goal.


Bederf jouself! Romanza is an Afrikaans romance imprint dedicated to bringing readers four new love stories each month.


LUCA is a Christian imprint. The name is derived from the Latin word ‘lux’ which means ‘light’ and reflects the way LUCA will support its readers in finding hope, inspiration, and answers in a world where it can be increasingly challenging to find and keep faith.

Atlantic Books is an independent British publishing house. It was founded in February 2000 and published its first book in May 2001. It has since developed a list that has a world-wide reputation for quality, originality and breadth, and includes fiction, history, politics, memoir and current affairs. 

Canongate was founded in 1973.  It has emerged as one of the most dynamic publishing houses in Britain. With a distinctly international outlook, Canongate Books continues to nurture and publish new talent from around the world, whilst retaining the essence of the Scottish Canon. Canongate Books has offices in Edinburgh and London, with partners in New York and Melbourne.
