Bookish delights at this year's Open Book Festival

Just 2 days to go until the Open Book Festival in Cape Town begins
 
The 130+ events will be running from the Fugard Theatre, the Book Lounge and other selected venues. Once again, it’s a great mix of ticketed and free events with something for everyone.

After graduating from UCT and Rhodes, Emma accidentally spent ten years working in film production. She later returned to UCT, where she taught film and media, got her MA in creative writing, her PhD in Film and Media Studies, and produced several children. Thirty Second World is her second novel.

Michéle Rowe is a South African scriptwriter who works primarily as a head writer and story originator for television and film. She attended the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg, and has a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from the University of Cape Town. What Hidden Lies is her first crime novel, and the winner of the 2011 Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger Award.

Tan Twan Eng was born in Penang, Malaysia. His debut novel The Gift of Rain was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2007 and has been widely translated. His latest release is The Garden of Evening Mists which was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2012 and won the 2012 Man Asian Literary Prize. Twan divides his time between Kuala Lumpur and Cape Town.

Mamphela Ramphele is a leading South African politician, academic, businesswoman, medical doctor and former anti-apartheid activist. She is currently a trustee on the board of the Rockefeller Foundation in New York and in February 2013, announced the formation of a new political party, named Agang SA.

Peter Piegl has worked as a photographer and journalist. He spent just over a decade at SA’s premier men’s lifestyle magazine, FHM. Working his way up from picture editor, Piegl was appointed managing editor before being approached to head up the re-launch of Playboy South Africa.

Gareth Crocker was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1974. He has a degree in English, Psychology and Communications and has worked as a journalist, copywriter, news editor, public relations manager, publishing editor and, most recently, head of communications and spokesperson for a multinational corporation.

Patrick deWitt’s writing has appeared in several US magazines and anthologies. His first novel, Ablutions, was published by Granta Books in 2009. He had previously published a short book of random writings and bad advice, Help Yourself Help Yourself. He has worked as a labourer, a clerk, a dishwasher and a bartender. His second novel, The Sisters Brothers won the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, the Govenor General Literary Award and was shortlisted for the 2011 Man Booker Prize. He lives with his wife and son in Portland, Oregon.

Damien Brown is a South African-born doctor based in London. He began writing seriously after his last humanitarian posting, encouraged by readers of a blog he kept while working in Africa. Band-Aid for a Broken Leg is an account of life on the medical frontline in Angola, Mozambique and South Sudan.

Marli Roode was born in South Africa in 1984 and moved to the UK when she was 17. After earning both a BA and an MA in Philosophy and Literature, she worked as a freelance journalist in London before beginning work on her novel at Manchester University's Centre for New Writing. She is currently a Writing Fellow at Manchester University, where she is working on her second novel.

Martinique Stilwell was born in South Africa in 1967 and from the age of 9 until she turned 16, she sailed around the world with her family. Martinique now lives in Cape Town where she works as a doctor.

Karin Brynard was born in Koffiefontein in the Free State and studied at the University of Pretoria. As a political reporter for Rapport she covered the liberation struggle and the release of Nelson Mandela. Her debut novel Plaasmoord won the University of Johannesburg Debut Prize and the M-Net Book Prize in the film category.

 
Alex Latimer is a South African illustrator. His first children’s book was published by Random House in the UK and Peachtree Publishers in the USA. Alex is also part of the team responsible for the cartoon The Western Nostril. He lives in Cape Town.
