A bookseller reviews Glenn Agliotti: A Biography

This entry was posted on 17 July 2013.
This book, as the title suggests, is all about Glenn Agliotti. It delves into his murky past of crime and the South African underworld and makes an attempt to beseech all those who read it into seeing the world through Glenn Agliotti’s eyes and follow his account of what happened during the trials and accusations that beset him from all sides. Everything from the murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble, to surveillance cameras being installed throughout Agliotti’s home, and even a robbery of his house is contained within this book.

His story covers everything from growing up with a strict, frugal and distant father to making his first buck as a salesman straight after the army. All of which played a vital role in moulding the type of person that he has become and briefly examining some of the crimes he openly admits to committing. Glenn mentions in special detail how the subsequent house arrests and probing of his life greatly affected his business interests, himself and his family.

An inside perspective on the Scorpions (before their disbandment) is also given to us in the form of how they (the Scorpions) operate to a certain extent and how far their treatment of alleged criminals goes. While Glenn Agliotti is far from completely innocent he condemns the Scorpions repeatedly and makes mention that they used him to take down one of his closest friends, Jackie Selebi by presenting him with an ultimatum he could not refuse.

Known by the alias “The Landlord” Glenn also admits to being a facilitator between powerful men, and often charging outrageous fees for this service alone, all of which he openly says does not constitute anything illegal. Some of the information sounds shady, and some of it is covered by an extremely weak story or two. There is truly some information that will shock you, and at other times cause you to say “well that isn’t surprising at all”.

Overall Glenn Agliotti: A Biography  is truly a complex book that requires the reader to make up his/her own mind of the contents within and the choice on whether or not to believe the story is entirely up to the reader. Filled with a plethora of drugs, crime, shady deals and outright pay off’s, this is definitely a book to explore.

Buy Glenn Agliotti: A Biography and find out for yourself, or dismiss it without a backward glance, the onus is on you.
