The TikTok Book Revolution

This entry was posted on 13 July 2022.

When we read something we love, we want everyone to know about it,
and this is why the TikTok community, #BookTok, has taken off. It serves
up genuine content with authentic feelings and reactions. It’s also really
good at igniting the fear of missing out in us … Here are some of the
authors whose books have seen a resurgence, thanks to #BookTok.

Karen M. McManus is the author of One of Us is Lying, a book that went viral, not least because of the hit Netflix series based on the book, now in its second season. One of Us is Lying forms part of a series, including the second book, One of Us is Next. The third book, One of Us is Back, is due out in 2023.

McManus is the #1 New York Times and international bestselling author of young adult thriller/mystery novels, including One of Us Is Lying, One of Us Is Next, Two Can Keep a Secret, and The Cousins. Her work has been translated into more than 40 languages worldwide. Karen lives in Massachusetts and holds a master's degree in Journalism from Northeastern University, which she mostly uses to draft fake news stories for her novels.

He dies 24 hours before he could post their deepest secrets online. Investigators conclude it's no accident. All of them are suspects.

Everyone has secrets, right?

What really matters is how far you'll go to protect them.

Jennifer Lynn Barnes’s Inheritance Games series has been trending on TikTok ever since the first book hit shelves in 2020. The book landed right on the midst of #BookTok’s rise to fame, helping this author, who had already written more than a dozen acclaimed young adult novels, soar to new heights.

Barnes is also a Fulbright Scholar with advanced degrees in psychology, psychiatry, and cognitive science. She received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 2012 and is currently a professor of psychology and professional writing at the University of Oklahoma.

Lynn Painter got picked up by #BookTok with her escapist rom-coms that read like films. They’re just so much fun to read! Painter is a fan of rom-coms herself – and you can tell!

Painter lives with her husband and pack of wild children in Nebraska, where she is a weekly contributor to the Omaha World-Herald and an avid fan of napping. When working on a new book, she can often be found sound asleep on her office floor. Some might say she should grow up and stop randomly dozing off like she's a toddler, but Lynn considers it part of her writing process.

Amy Lea’s Set on You is a “compulsive enemies-to-lovers romance that also deals with body neutrality and influencer culture”. Starring Crystal Chen, a plus-size, half-Asian fit-fluencer, the book that challenges some of today’s stereotypes became an instant TikTok hit.

Lea is a Canadian bureaucrat by day and contemporary romance author by night (and weekends). She writes laugh out loud romantic comedies featuring strong heroines, witty banter, mid-2000s pop culture references, and happily ever afters. When Amy is not writing, she can be found fan-girling over other romance books on Instagram (@amyleabooks), eating potato chips with reckless abandon, and snuggling with her husband and goldendoodle. Set on You is her first book and her second book, Exes and O's, is coming in early 2023.

Enter firefighter Scott Ritchie, the smug new gym patron who routinely steals her favourite squat rack. Soon, sparks start flying...

As the ultra-competitive foes battle for gym domination, the last thing they expect is to run into each other at their grandparents' engagement party. And, in the lead-up to the wedding, Crystal discovers there's a soft heart under Scott's muscled exterior. Bonding over family, fitness and cheesy pick-up lines, she just might have found her person.

But when a photo of them goes viral, savage internet trolls put their relationship to the test...  Are they strong enough to get through it?

Emily Henry is another author whose books caught fire on TikTok. Her enemies-to-lovers trope has a realness to it that got readers talking – and feeling. The books whittled their way right to the heart of readers, fostering a connection hard to forget.
