Tsitsi Dangarembga, well-known author of Nervous Conditions and founder and CEO of Nyerai Films, has optioned films rights to Imran Garda’s debut novel The Thunder That Roars. Dangarembga will supervise the adaptation and production of the film as creative producer. The company plan to begin principal photography as early as next year.

Longlisted for a 2014 Etisalat Prize, Garda’s taut and thrilling The Thunder That Roars draws on the author’s experience as a well-known international journalist and news anchor. Most recently Garda hosted the debate show Third Rail on Al Jazeera America in New York City.

The Thunder That Roars tells the story of Yusuf Carrim, a man whose tech-savvy coverage of the Arab Spring saw his journalism career skyrocket. Yusuf returns to South Africa when his wealthy father asks him to help look for Sam, a missing family friend. Yusuf ’s search for Sam takes him to places he could never have imagined, while he discovers facts that undermine a lifetime’s assumptions about his own identity. The novel grapples with themes of migration and displacement and includes scenes from Lambedusa, a primary entry point to Europe for immigrants from Africa.

The film deal was brokered by Aoife Lennon-Ritchie at the Lennon-Ritchie Agency.
